Employer Employee Relationship in Today’s Context
Figure 1 - Employer Employee Relationship
(JDI, 2017)
Modern
HR management treats employee as the most valuable asset of the organizations.
The managers or the employers utilize this asset to the benefit of the
organization. This requires building a strong connection or relationship
between the two parties.
Employee-Employer
relationship is concerned with the methodologies and techniques adopted by
employer to deal with employees either jointly over their trade unions or individually
(Armstrong, 2017).
According
to Guest (2007) employer-employee relationship is something concerned with:
“The insights of both parties to the employment relationship, organization and
individual, of the mutual promises and responsibilities implicit in that
relationship”.
From
above definitions we can identify that there is a psychological contract between
the two parties. It is some kind of an informal bond between employer and
employee based on mutual respect. This bond must be maintained throughout the
employment. A stronger bond would result in the employee becoming more
committed to the organization. According
to CIPD (2017) a positive climate of employee relationships - with high levels
of employee participation and commitment can improve business results (CIPD,
2017).

Discussion (Shutterstock, 2018)
Negotiation
One aspect of employee-employer
relationships is concerned with negotiation. Negotiation is a process for
resolving conflict between two parties whereby both modify their demands to
achieve a mutually acceptable compromise.
Characteristics of the negotiating process in Employer Employee Relations (Henderson, 2017)
- The parties are not involved in a one-off negotiation; there is a persistent relationship to be preserved
- Negotiation is generally about
more than one issue
eg- Pay and some aspect of working conditions - Negotiations are conducted by agents from each side and so agreements reached by them will need authorization from their constituencies
Nature of modern employment relationships
The contract is underpinned by the physiological
contract which comprises “certain assumptions and expectations about what
employers and employees have to offer and are willing to deliver. (Armstrong,
2017).
